Beatport Enters a New Era: From Digital Record Store to Global Music Technology Platform

After nearly nine years at the helm, Robb McDaniels has stepped down as Beatport CEO to become Executive Chairman, handing leadership to Matt Gralen and Helen Sartory. His tenure transformed Beatport from a specialist electronic music download store into a global music technology platform, setting the stage for its next phase of growth.

As longtime CEO Robb McDaniels moves into the chairman's role, Beatport is entering a new chapter under Matt Gralen and Helen Sartory. The leadership transition offers an opportunity to examine how one of electronic music's most influential companies evolved from an online download store into a broader ecosystem of music discovery, DJ technology, distribution and artist services.

For more than two decades, Beatport has occupied a distinctive position in electronic music. Unlike Spotify or Apple Music, which primarily serve mass-market listeners, Beatport built its business around the professional and aspiring DJ, connecting electronic music labels, producers and artists with the people who purchase and perform their music.

Its evolution reflects a wider transformation of the electronic music economy, from vinyl and digital downloads to streaming subscriptions, software integration, distribution services and data-driven music discovery.

The departure of Robb McDaniels from the CEO position marks an important turning point. The central question is no longer whether Beatport can remain the dominant specialist destination for electronic music downloads, but how it can expand its relevance in an increasingly competitive, technology-driven industry.

McDaniels arrived at Beatport in October 2017, when the company was recovering from a difficult period. Its former parent, SFX Entertainment, had entered bankruptcy proceedings, raising questions about the sustainability of its business and the future of its assets.

McDaniels brought experience in digital distribution, music technology and independent artist services. His appointment signalled an effort to rebuild Beatport as a financially sustainable business while preserving its specialist position within electronic music.

By the time he stepped down as CEO on June 30, 2026, Beatport reported that revenue had more than quadrupled during his tenure. The company also reported serving more than one million unique customers annually, while expanding its portfolio to approximately a dozen products and services.

From digital record store to electronic music ecosystem.

Founded in 2004, Beatport emerged as an online alternative to traditional vinyl record shopping. It gave DJs access to digital electronic music releases, specialist genre classifications, curated charts and downloadable tracks suitable for professional performance.

The company became particularly influential in house, techno, trance and other electronic genres, where DJs, producers and independent labels depend on specialist distribution and discovery channels.

Over time, Beatport moved beyond its original transactional business model.

Today, the broader Beatport Group operates across several interconnected parts of the music industry.

Beatport is not primarily a consumer streaming platform like Spotify, nor a conventional record label or music publisher. It generally provides the marketplace, technology and infrastructure through which music is discovered, purchased, performed and distributed.

That distinction is central to its commercial position. Rather than competing directly for every mainstream music listener, Beatport concentrates on the professional and creator-facing activities that support electronic music culture.

Its corporate website currently reports 10 million registered users, more than 80,000 labels supported and over $400 million paid to artists and labels since 2004. These figures describe different measures from the company's one-million-plus annual customer statistic.

The acquisition strategy behind Beatport's expansion

One of McDaniels' most significant contributions was developing Beatport through acquisitions, transforming a specialist digital retailer into a broader music technology group.

2018 | Pulselocker
A DJ streaming and music storage technology platform. Its technology helped establish the foundations for Beatport's integrated streaming services, reducing dependence on individual downloads.

2020 | Loopmasters
A major expansion into music production, including Loopcloud and Plugin Boutique. The acquisition gave Beatport exposure to samples, virtual instruments, software plug-ins and recurring producer subscriptions.

Beatport acquires ampsuite and launches products for Artists & Labels

2022 | ampsuite
A business-to-business music distribution and label-management technology company. It extended Beatport's presence into the infrastructure used by labels and distributors.

2022 | LabelRadar
A platform connecting emerging artists with record labels through digital demo submissions and A&R workflows. The acquisition strengthened Beatport's role earlier in the music creation and discovery process.

These acquisitions illustrate a deliberate strategy: increase Beatport's relevance across the music production and distribution lifecycle rather than relying exclusively on individual track sales.

The result is a business with multiple potential revenue streams, including digital purchases, subscriptions, production software, business-to-business services and live-event activity.

Another notable development occurred in March 2026, when Beatport began consolidating Beatsource into its main platform. Beatsource had served open-format DJs working across genres such as hip-hop, pop, Latin and rock. Bringing the two services together represented an effort to simplify the product portfolio while expanding Beatport's reach beyond its traditional electronic music audience.

Why McDaniels became Executive Chairman.

Beatport announced the transition in April 2026, with the changes taking effect on July 1.

The company described the move as a strategic leadership evolution intended to support its next phase of growth, rather than a departure following an announced operational crisis.

McDaniels remains involved in strategic planning, important commercial partnerships and advising the new leadership team. The CEO and president/COO now assume responsibility for leading the company day to day.

The arrangement also provides continuity. Both incoming executives joined Beatport in 2022 and worked closely with McDaniels before the transition.

In a July interview with MusicTech, Gralen emphasised that the leadership transition represented an evolution of existing plans rather than a major change in direction.

There is also a broader ownership context. Investment firm Axar Capital played an important role in Beatport's post-bankruptcy recovery and described McDaniels' appointment and subsequent acquisitions as central to the company's turnaround.

However, Beatport has not publicly established a single definitive reason for McDaniels' decision to relinquish the CEO position. It would therefore be misleading to attribute the move solely to a potential sale, investor pressure or a change in profitability without stronger evidence.

The confirmed story is a planned transition in which the executive who led the turnaround remains involved while two established senior managers take operational control.

A further detail adds important context to the transition. In an April interview with Billboard, McDaniels explained that Beatport had explored a potential sale in 2025, although discussions did not produce a transaction the company wanted to pursue. The existing investor chose to remain involved, with management concentrating on further growth and potentially finding a suitable strategic or financial partner in the future.

McDaniels also indicated that, after nine years of leading the business, he wanted to reduce his day-to-day responsibilities and devote more time to advising and mentoring other businesses in the music industry.

This makes the transition more than a conventional executive succession. It takes place as Beatport considers its long-term ownership, capital requirements and next phase of expansion.

Chief Executive Officer, since July 2026

Gralen joined Beatport in 2022 as Chief Financial Officer and was promoted to President and CFO in 2024.

Before Beatport, he served as Executive Vice President of Corporate Development at UnitedMasters, a digital music distribution business for independent artists, and Vice President of Strategy and Operations at Mass Appeal, an entertainment company with strong roots in hip-hop culture.

Earlier, he worked at Goldman Sachs and Raine Group, advising and investing in media, technology and consumer businesses.

Helen Sartory, COO, Beatport

Helen Sartory

President and Chief Operating Officer, since July 2026

Sartory joined Beatport in April 2022, initially overseeing creator services before becoming Chief Revenue Officer in 2024.

She previously worked as Director and General Manager at The Rattle LA, an incubator supporting music technology startups and independent artists.

Before entering the music industry, she spent approximately a decade in investment banking, working at Greenhill & Co. and later at Lazard, where she became Head of Emerging Technologies.

She has also held industry board and advisory positions involving the Association for Electronic Music, International Music Summit and Music Technology UK.

Together, Gralen and Sartory bring complementary backgrounds in finance, investment, corporate development, music technology and commercial operations.

Their appointments suggest a focus on disciplined growth, product development and expanding the value Beatport delivers to DJs, artists, producers and labels.

What comes next for Beatport?

One of the most important strategic questions facing the new leadership is how Beatport can maintain the relevance of paid downloads while expanding its streaming, subscription and technology services.

In their July 2026 interview with MusicTech, Gralen and Sartory outlined priorities including improvements to DJ library management, expanded analytics and management tools for record labels, and greater engagement with music fans.

They also discussed the challenges posed by generative AI, particularly its implications for music marketplaces and the relationship between technology and human creativity.

For Beatport, the opportunity is to connect more of the electronic music value chain, from production and distribution to discovery, DJ performance and audience engagement.

However, expansion introduces its own challenges. The company must balance the interests of professional DJs, independent labels, music producers and increasingly diverse audiences, while competing with specialist technology providers and larger streaming platforms.

Its long-term success may depend less on the number of tracks it sells and more on how effectively it connects the people, technology and commercial services supporting the electronic music industry.

A new chapter for electronic music's digital infrastructure.

Robb McDaniels leaves the Beatport CEO position after nearly nine years, having overseen a significant turnaround and the expansion of the company into a diversified music technology business.

His move to Executive Chairman preserves his involvement in the company's strategy and partnerships while giving Matt Gralen and Helen Sartory responsibility for its next stage of development.

The leadership transition also raises a broader question for the electronic music industry: can a specialist platform continue growing by serving the professional needs of DJs, artists and labels, rather than pursuing the mass-market audience model of mainstream streaming services?

For Beatport, the next chapter will be about demonstrating that its combination of music retail, creator technology, distribution infrastructure, data and live experiences can deliver sustainable growth.

The company helped define how electronic music was bought and discovered in the digital era. Its new leadership must now determine how Beatport participates in the next evolution of the music business.

Closing thoughts.

Beatport's new leadership brings an interesting combination of financial expertise, corporate development and music technology experience.

With both Matt Gralen and Helen Sartory having backgrounds in investment banking and strategic growth, the company appears well positioned to pursue further acquisitions, strengthen its existing portfolio or explore new investment opportunities.

Whether this signals a more aggressive M&A strategy or preparations for a future ownership transaction remains to be seen. However, one thing is clear:

Beatport's next chapter may be defined as much by its corporate strategy and capital allocation decisions as by its influence on electronic music.
